Barnwell Majors off to banging good start

  • Barnwell right-hander Bryce Pickney silenced Belvedere’s bats in Saturday’s tournament opener.

The Barnwell Major League All-Stars (11-12 year-olds) got off to a banging start Saturday in the opening round of the Dixie baseball tournament at Lemon Park in Barnwell.

The Barnwell All-Stars were clicking on all cylinders, scoring early and often enroute to a 11-1 victory over Belvedere.

The Barnwell All-Stars exploded for 11 hits in the contest behind the hot bat of Clay Pender.

Pender wreaked havoc on Belvedere’s pitching, finishing with three hits, a home run and two RBIs.

Barnwell’s production at the plate was more than enough for right-hander Bryce Pickney, who drew the start. Pickney pitched superbly, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Barnwell Major coach Donny Sanders said the team’s bats set the tempo early.

“We came out at the start and hit the ball really well,” Sanders said. “Offensively, it was just an outstanding performance throughout the lineup.”

In the contest, Barnwell got off to a terrific start with four runs in the first inning.

In the inning, Clay Pender led with a single and advanced to third off a hit by Nathan Moody. One batter later, DJ Platts brought Pender home with a single to center field. After Jeremy Sanders reached on an error, Moody and Platts each scored on passed balls. Sanders later scored off a hit by Javien Rio.

Down 4-0, Belvedere answered back with a run off two hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning.

Ahead 4-1, Barnwell added to its lead in the second inning. Highlighted by a two-run RBI triple by Clay Pender, Barnwell scored three more runs. Others who singled and scored in the inning included Jiquan Thomas and Kiez Roberts.

Leading 7-1, Barnwell put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. Again, it was Clay Pender who provided the fireworks at the plate with a two-run homer. Also scoring in the inning were Hunter Zorn, Jiquan Thomas and Kiez Roberts.
