Minor League All-Stars dominate Gregg Park
To say that the Barnwell Minor League All-Stars (9-10 year-olds) were hot Sunday in their opening game in the Dixie District VI tournament in Graniteville might be an understatement.
Smoking hot or on fire might be more fitting phrases to decribe Barnwell’s performanace in a 10-4 victory over Gregg Park.
The Barnwell All-Stars got significant help from extra-base hits, rattling a home run and three doubles among their 14 hits.
Fueling the hitting barrage was Paxton Wall, who delivered three hits and scored three runs. Also having a good day at the plate was Cameron Austin. Austin had only one hit in the game, but it was a huge one as he delivered a three-run homer in the first inning.
Barnwell All-Star coach Blake Austin said the team played a heck of a game.
“Great win to start the tournament,” Austin said. “We came out with a lot of energy and just played well all the way through. Our bats were really good and our pitchers did a great job of throwing strike. Overall it was just a good team win.”
Barnwell set the tone early with three runs in the first inning. For the team, Jayson Clark reached on as single then advanced to second after a walk by Paxton Wall. One batter later, Barnwell had three runs on the scoreboard thanks to a three-run homer by Cameron Austin.
Down 3-0, Gregg Park fired back in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer to narrow the lead at 3-2.
The score stayed that way until the third inning. In that inning, Barnwell erupted for six runs off five hits to take a commanding 9-2 lead. The scoring run was highlighted by a two-run RBI double from Hayden Pierce.
Others shining at the plate in the inning included Tanner Cato with a double and Paxton Wall, Micah Bradley and Trey Boleman with singles.
Trailing by seven runs, the Gregg Park All-Stars drew a little closer in the bottom of the fourth inning. They scored two runs off three hits to make the score 9-4.
Barnwell, however, answered back with a run in the fifth inning. Paxton Wall doubled and scored to complete the scoring.
On the mound, Paxton Wall, Jackson Hutto and Cameron Austin combined for the win. Austin came in as the closer and struck out five straight batters.
Defensively, Micah Bradley, Bradley Richardson, Jayson Clark, Jaden Pinkney, Paxton Wall, Cameron Austin and Kaleb Wilson all played well.
