WEHS wins tennis opener

  • Williston-Elko High top player Jasmine Jeter scored a straight set win against Pelion High.

On Aug. 24 in their season opener at Pelion High, the Williston-Elko High girls tennis team rolled to a 5-1 victory.

Williston-Elko High coach Bernard Walters said it was an outstanding outing for the team.

“There is no better way to start the season than with a win,” Walters said. “Many of our players responded well to pressure situations on the court. We did a good job of making the most of our opportunities.”

The Lady Blue Devils’ top flight player Jasmine Jeter got the team off to a terrific start in the match. Jeter was on top of her game, recording six aces in a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Kaylyn Myers of WEHS followed suit at No. 2 singles, sweeping her opponent in straight sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Skylar Brown came out strong in the opening set with a 6-1 win. Despite good effort, Brown was unable to duplicate the feat over the next two sets losing by scores of 3-6, 7-10.

In No. 4 singles, Yasmine Dukes got the Lady Blue Devils back in the win column with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set win.

Maggie Smith then closed out singles play by dominating her match with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win.

The Lady Blue Devils also notched a win in No. 1 doubles.

“We have a lot of first year players so this win was very big for their confidence,” Walters said.
