Barnwell volleyball team nets win

  • Hannah Creech of Barnwell High returns a serve in the second set against BEHS.

The Barnwell High volleyball team netted a four-set victory over region rival Bamberg-Ehrhardt High Thursday, Sept. 14 in Barnwell.

Barnwell coach Carol Massengale said the team played with more confidence as the match progressed.

“It wasn’t a good start for our team but it was a great finish,” Massengale said. “We did a good job with our serving and we did a superb job of keeping the ball in play and defending around the net.”

A back-and-forth opening set was played well by both teams as they battled to an early 9-9 tie. As the set went on, though, it was the Lady Red Raiders’ aggressive play around the net that allowed the team to pull away for a 25-21 victory.

“We committed a lot of mistakes in the first set because we were out of position,” Massengale said.

After dropping the opening set, the Lady Warhorses regrouped in the second set and scored a 25-15 win.

The Lady Warhorses’ fortunes changed behind the serving of Hannah Creech and Kaylie Pridgen.

The duo combined for nine of the team’s final 12 points as the Lady Warhorses evened the match at a game apiece.

Creech, who scored five straight serving points, including two aces during one stretch, finished with seven serving points, four assists and a dig. Pridgen tallied six serving points, four assists and two digs.

Another contributing in the set included Kyra Shuler with three digs and two assists. Tori Sanders, who led the team with five assists also added two serving points. Makayla Anderson had three assists and two digs.

The third set followed much of the same style of play but this time it was the serving of Julie Davis and hitting of Camryn Holloway that led the team to a 25-12 win.

Tied at 6-6, the team scored 11 of the next 14 points behind six straight serving points by Davis. Holloway did a solid job up front, finishing with three kills and two blocks.

Also stepping up in the match was Makenzie Anderson, Kyra Shuler and Kaylie Pridgen. Anderson recorded three assists and two serving points. Shuler and Pridgen led the team with four assists each.

The Lady Warhorses would then close out the match by winning a tough-played fourth set by a score of 25-20.

Offensively, Pridgen led the way with four serving points, three digs and two assists. Davis and Sanders each had four serving points and Shuler and Makayla Anderson each added three assists.

Defensively, Kayla Rapp, Hannah Creech, Makenzie Anderson, Holloway and Davis all played well.
