BHS standouts make college choices

Barnwell High School softball standouts Kelci Brown and Kyra Shuler signed their letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the next level Nov. 12 in the school library.

Brown committed to Erskine College in Due West. Last season, she was selected All-State and Region Player of the Year. She was the top pitcher in the region with 16 wins, an ERA of 1.95 and 103 strikeouts. At the plate, Brown batted .529 with 45 hits, 42 runs scored and 18 RBIs.

Shuler, who is a three-time all-region performer and Coach’s Award recipient committed to Claflin College in Orangeburg. Shuler was one of the top hitters in the region last season. She batted .386 with 34 runs scored, 25 RBIs and two home runs.

Barnwell High coach Carol Massengale said she’s excited for both players.

“This is a great day for Kelci Brown and Kyra Shuler. I remember both of these young ladies when they were very young and could see both of them had the potential to be great,” Massengale said. “Both of these young ladies have represented their families, school and team with class and a level of dedication that is are among teenagers today.”

Barnwell High Athletic Director David Anastasia said both players are class acts.

“I’m very proud of Kelci Brown and Kyra Shuler. They both have achieved great accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the playing field,” Anastasia said.

Massengale said both players are just scracthing the surface of their talents.

“Without a doubt these ladies will make a mark on and off the field and both universities are fortunate to have them,” Massengale said. “It is with great pride that we wish them well in their future endeavors.
