Barnwell boys beat AF for 2nd time
Whether it’s a scrimmage or a regular season game, the Allendale-Fairfax High and Barnwell High boys basketball teams come ready to play when they meet each other.
That was the case again Jan. 30 in Barnwell with the teams meeting for the second time of the season.
On Jan.12 in the teams’ first meeting in Allendale, the Warhorses got the best of the Tigers, 67-62.
This time, however, Allendale-Fairfax was looking to even the season and avoid a season sweep.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the outcome was the same as the first meeting. In a very competitive game, the Warhorses held off the Tigers late for a 67-66 win.
With the win, Barnwell High moves to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in region play.
“This was a huge win for our basketball team tonight,”Barnwell High coach Michael Highsmith said. “Anytime Allendale-Fairfax and Barnwell plays, it’s usually a battle. Tonight was no exception. I have to give a lot of credit to our players for coming with big shots late in the game.”
For Barnwell High, numerous players stepped up with contributions on a night where four players scored in double digits for the team.
Brashawn Spann was one player who played exceptional on both ends of the court. Spann captured a double-double for the game, fiinishing 10 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Russell Branch led the team with eight assists, added 11 points and four steals. Markel Corley had a strong game in the paint with eight rebounds and 10 points scored. Pete Elmore, who sank two big three-pointers in the fourth quarter, finished with 11 points. James Mingo added eight points, including a three-pointer.
Highlighting the Tigers were Lozando Badger and Shawn Jones. Badger led all scorers with 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Jones registered 16 points, seven steals and four rebounds. Tyquavian Youmans had 10 points and nine rebounds. Demoray Devoe added seven points.
