Lady Hawks soar over Lady Blue Devils
The Williston-Elko High girls varsity basketball team was no match for Blackville-Hilda High Tuesday, Jan. 30 in the Hawks’ Nest.
The Lady Hawks won handily over the in-county rivals by a dominating score of 104-40.
The game was never in doubt. The Lady Hawks soared to a 16-6 lead five minutes into the game and never looked back.
With the win, Blackville-Hilda High moves to 14-5 overall and 10-2 in region play.
Blackville-Hilda High coach Corette Ferguson Richmond said the team played with a lot of energy.
“I have a terrific group of girls. This is an unselfish group that believes in each other,” Richmond said.
The Lady Hawks was led in scoring by Marlayna Singleton with 26 points and 11. Behind six first-quarter points by Singleton, the Lady Hawks started early and refused to let up with a 20-12 first quarter lead
In the second quarter, Rishona Washington and Chiante Daniels took over the scoring for the Lady Hawks. The duo combined for 18 of the team’s 20 points in the quarter as they stretched their lead to 40-18. Daniels led with 10 and Washington had eight points.
In the third quarter, the onslaught continued. The Lady Hawks scored almost at-will in transition with De’Siree James, Marlayna Singleton, Jada Smalls, Kaitlyn Richmond and Arianna Gibson scoring layups for a 64-26 lead with 2:31 left in the third quarter.
Leading 92-32 with 3:32 left to play, the Lady Hawks surged toward the century mark on the scoreboard.
For the team, Jada Smalls scored back-to-back buckets on putbacks. Marlayna Singleton followed with a three-pointer before Kaitlyn Richmond scored off an offensive rebound to make the score 100-36 with 1:17 left to play.
Nine different Lady Hawks saw action, with eight players scoring, including a season-high six in double figures.
For the team, Arianna Gibson was second on the team with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Chiante Daniels finished with 16 points. Rishona Washington scored 12 points while Jada Smalls and Kaitlyn Richmond each had 10 points. Nyla Jenkins added five points.
The Lady Blue Devils were highlighted by Elaysha Brown with 14 points. Mia Cummings added 10 points.
