On Thursday night, Barnwell County high school football teams got their first taste of game-type action in jamboree games
Barnwell High traveled to Pelion High to take part in the Region 6 tournament. The six-team field also included Edisto High, Jasper County High, Pelion High, Silver Bluff High and Wade Hampton High.
There were three games scheduled for the event with each team playing one 15-minute half.
In the first half game, Edisto High played Wade Hampton High.
Barnwell High battled Silver Bluff High in the second half and prevailed by a score of 7-0.
In the contest, Silver Bluff went on the offensive first. However, the Bulldogs found the going tough as the Warhorses held them to a three-and-out on their initial possession.
For the Warhorses, Mark Riley had the key defensive stop on the series when he corralled the Bulldogs quarterback for a one-yard loss on third down and two.
Others shining defensively for BHS on the series included Travis Washington, Sammy Murray and Octavius Banes.
Unlike their counterparts, the Warhorse offense enjoyed success on its first possession. On second down, Patrick Green took the handoff on an end around and raced 12 yards for a first down. Two plays later, Terry Williams made a nifty nine-yard run for another first down.
The promising drive, however, ended four plays later when the Warhorses failed to connected on a fourth down pass attempt.
After the exchange of possession, the Warhorse defense continued to keep the Bulldogs bottled up offensively.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt for the second straight time after gaining just six yards on three plays.
On their second possession, the Warhorses looked to redeem themselves after squandering an early scoring opportunity.
On a first down run, Terry Williams picked up a block from Kevin Miller and scampered 16 yards for a first down.
Four plays later, Tyler Davis completed the six-play march by tossing a 28-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Nolan Wyndham, who was streaking down the sidelines. Dargan Antley added the kick to complete the scoring.
“We played okay, but nothing spectacular,” Barnwell High head coach Ed Moore said. “Offensively, we should have scored a couple more times. Defensively, we missed too many tackles.”
In other jamboree action, Williston-Elko High got past in-county rival Blackville-Hilda by a score of 16-6.
The Blue Devils got off to an unpleasant start offensively in the contest. The team fumbled on its first two snaps.
The second fumbled proved to be costly. On the play, quarterback Tamyn Garrick lost his handle on the ball. Garrick then tried to retrieve the ball, but had it knocked free by Terrence Hayes of the Hawks. Terrell Brown of Blackville-Hilda recovered the ball in the end zone for a score. The extra point attempt was no good.
Ahead 6-0, the Hawks offense looked to add to their lead. The team, however, also stumbled on its first possession.
After gaining just four yards on first and second down, quarterback Chris Kearse was sacked by Andrea Williams of the Devils on a third down pass attempt to end the drive.
After a shaky start, the Blue Devils got into rhythm on their third possession.
On first down, Kendric Salley went off tackle for six yards. On third down and three, Dexter Staley turned a short reception into a six-yard gain for a first down.
Three plays later, the Blue Devils hit paydirt when Staley broke free off the left side and raced 37 yards for a score. Kendric Salley ran for the two-point conversion.
On the Blue Devils nextpossession, the team drove 73 yards for a score.
On the march, Garrick completed 3 of 4 passes for 53 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass to Rokeem Williams in the back of the endzone. Garrick passed to Staley for the two-point conversion to cap the scoring.
“Offensively, we made some mistakes early, but we rebounded and played  pretty well,” Williston-Elko head  coach Dwayne Garrick said. “Overall I thought it was a good physical test for our team. Blackville-Hilda was very stout up front. They gave us a good look on both sides of the ball.”
Blackville-Hilda head coach David Berry said his team played well in spurts.
“This was a good chance to to see what we could do under the lights for the first time,” Berry said. “Overall, we had several areas we need to improve on. Defensively,we got to tackle better. Offensively, we have to do a better job of moving people off the ball.
