Barnwell girls best Blackville-Hilda Lady Hawks in basketball
The Barnwell High School varsity girls basketball team is on an early roll.
On Friday night in Barnwell, the Lady Warhorses wrapped up its fourth victory of the season as they cruised past county rival Blackville-Hilda High by a score of 40-22.
With the win, Barnwell High sweeps the season series over Blackville-Hilda High two games to none. Barnwell High improves to 4-0 in the standing.
Behind the shooting of Jasmine Tooks, Barnwell High led by a much as 18 points in the first half and didn't let Blackville-Hilda get any closer than 16 points in the second half.
Tooks, who has averaged double digits in all four games this season, finished with a game high 16 points, nine steals and four assists.
Defensively, Barnwell High has also excelled during its winning streak.
The Lady Warhorses held the Lady Hawks to just 10-of-40 shooting from the floor.
The game mark the fourth time this season Barnwell High has held an opponent to under 30 percent shooting.
Barnwell High coach David Smith said the team is making the most of its opportunities.
"Right now, we're playing really well as a unit," Smith said. "Defensively, we're pressing the ball and forcing turnovers. Offensively, we've hit the boards and keeping the ball alive for second shot chances. In our half-court setup, we are also making the right passes and converting baskets in the paint."
Offensively, several others players stood out for the Lady Warhorses, including Shanita Hutto, Meghan Williams, Shontvia Kearse and Brittany Breeland.
Hutto had her best game of the season with 11 points, 10 assists and five steals. Williams has a strong outing in the paint with nine points and 13 rebounds. Breeland added two points, five assists and five steals.
Once again for the Lady Hawks it was turnovers that doomed their chances for victory.
Against Barnwell High, the Lady Hawks committed 28 turnovers.
In the team's first loss to Barnwell High, Blackville-Hilda had 29 turnovers.
"Right now, we're not playing very good basketball. We have got to find a way to get better," Blackville-Hilda School head coach William Hammonds said.
Shawanda Ferguson continues to be a bright spot for the Lady Hawks despite their shooting woes.
Ferguson finished with a team high 12 points. She also grabbed 12 rebounds. Others scoring included Daniel Brown, Samone Harley and Candice Thomas with two points each.
