Barnwell High girls win district in softball
The Barnwell High varsity girls ran onto the field in jubilation Wednesday afternoon after beating Andrew High School in the district 5 softball championship game.
The Lady Warhorses's triumph with a 13-3 victory came behind the bats of seniors Devan Davis and Dray Davis.
The siblings unleased their ‘Wonder Twin' power at the plate, combining for six hits, including three home runs, a double and eight RBIs. Devan Davis did the most damage, finishing with three hits, including two home runs and five RBIs. Dray Davis went two-for-three with a home run and three RBIs.
"It was really fun and exciting for us as sisters. We've been on the same team playing softball since recreation and this is the first time we both hit home runs in the same game," Devan Davis said.
With the win, Barnwell High advances to the Lower State playoffs for the first time in four years.
Barnwell High record now stands at 14-2 overall.
Barnwell High coach Carol Massengale said the team played an outstanding game.
"I'm really proud of the girls. They really performed well today," Massengale said. "We have been hitting the ball well all season and our lineup has really come through in big games. Prior to this game, we had a good couple days of practice and we came out with a lot of confidence. We did a good job of putting the ball in play and the defense played solid behind the pitching of Brittany Wyndham."
The game started uptempo with each team scoring three runs in its first at-bat.
In the top of the first inning, Andrews High School plated three runs off two hits and an error.
In the bottom half of the first inning Barnwell High answered. For BHS, Andi Hogg singled, then scored off a double by Taylor Roberts. One batter later, Devan Davis landed a ball over the right field fence for a two-run homer to tie the score at 3-3.
In the following inning, the Lady Warhorses continued its fireworks display with its bats. During the inning, Barnwell High rocketed six hits which produced seven more runs for a 10-3 lead. Dray Davis highlighted the inning with a two-run homer. Others producing hits and scoring in the inning included Ashley Frank, Hogg, Hillary Zorn, Taylor Roberts, Brittany "B.B." Padgett and Taylor Priester. Roberts and Frank had RBI doubles in the inning.
Ahead at 10-3, the Lady Warhorses added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. For BHS, Zorn and Hogg each singled and scored. Wyndham and Padgett each were credited with RBIs.
Wyndham was a work of art on the mound, sketching out eight strikeouts on the way to her eighth victory of the season.
