The best soccer season in Barnwell High School varsity girls history came to a close May 15 in the class 2A playoff.

Barnwell High, coming off an impressive 4-1 playoff victory over Wade Hampton High, was hoping to keep the momentum going traveling to Bishop England High on Daniel Island in the third round of the playoffs.

However, despite a strong effort, the Lady Warhorses were unable to keep pace with a talented Bishop England squad and fell in the end by a score of 4-0.

The loss ends Barnwell High Schooool season at 16-7 overall and 1-1 in post-season play.

Barnwell High coach Michael Allen said the team played as well as it could.

"The girls played their hearts out and that's all I can ask as a coach," Allen said. "I thought we played pretty well defensively. However, offensively, we basically couldn't get anything going."

Despite the final score, the game was competitive throughout with the Lady Warhorses trailing by only two goals at halftime.

Defensively, several players performed well including Sidney Woodberry, Taylor Hooper, Jacqueline Gray, Tori Still, Katie McKay and Masey Mathias.

"We played well, but they are really good," senior Katie Rush said. "When you're playing a team like Bishop England, you can't make mistakes. They do a good job of capitalizing on every opportunity they get."

Allen said it was a successful season for Barnwell High girls varsity soccer and he hopes to keep the momentum going next year despite losing four key elements.

"We're losing four solid players in Kaylyn Huggins, Katie Rush, Sydney Woodberry and Masey Mathias. These girls are going to be hard to replace," Allen said. "The positive is we got majority of our starters coming back, so I hope to made another good run next year."
