BHHS comes up short again at Bolden Stadium
It was deja vu all over again Thursday night for the Blackville-Hilda High Hawks at Charles Bolden Stadium in Columbia.
Last season at Charles Bolden Stadium, Blackville-Hilda High was upset by C.A. Johnson High by a score of 8-7.
This time its was W.J. Keenan High School of Columbia beating the Hawks on the same field with a score of 14-12.
Blackville-Hilda Highm which fell behind 14-0 early, narrowed the lead to 14-12 midway in the fourth quarter.
The Hawks had a chance to win on a late drive, but an interception at the goal line ended the threat.
The loss drops Blackville-Hilda to 1-1 in the season.
Blackville-Hilda High coach David Berry said the team never gave up despite falling behind in the contest.
“I’m not happy with the loss, but I was pleased with how our kids fought hard to the very end,” Berry said. “They jumped on us early, but we didn’t lay down. We made a good effort to get back in the game. We had an opportunity to win it late, but just came up a little short.”
The game had the makings of a blowout in the early stages with the Raiders’ offense on the assault.
The Raiders’ first scoring march covered 58 yards. Raider quarterback Maurice Poole scored on a one-yard run to cap the seven-play drive. The kick after made the score 7-0.
Later in the quarter, the Raider mounted a time consuming 15-play, 75-yard drive that Poole completed with a six-yard toss to Tyler Smith.
Down by two touchdowns, the Hawks’ offense found rhythm late in the second quarter after a shaky start.
Senior quarterback Chris Kearse got the troops going. Kearse orchestrated a 76-yard march with runs of 10 and 23 yards.
Kearse then capped the nine-play drive with a 17-yard run with 55 seconds left in the first half to cut the score to 14-6.
“That was a big scoring drive for us. It gave us some momentum going into the second half,” Berry said.
After giving up two early touchdowns, the Hawk defense clamped down on Keenan High’s offense.
Early in the third quarter, Keenan drove to the Hawks’ 28-yard line, but the drive ended with a Mile Vice interception at the 10-yard line.
On Keenan High’s next possession, the Hawks defense came up big again.
This time, Quincy Kemp jarred the ball loose from a ball carrier and Rashood Howze recovered for the Hawks at Keenan’s 22-yard line.
It took the Hawks five plays to convert the turnover into points. On fourth and goal from the four-yard line, Roderick Kearse found a crease on the right side and slithered into the end zone. The score was 14-12 after the two-point conversion failed.
Late in the fourth quarter after another impressive defensive stop, the Hawks offense was on the move again. On first down from their 21-yard line, Kearse broke free on the option for a 65 yard gain. The promising drive, however, ended three plays later with an interception at the one-yard line with 50 seconds left to play.
“We had a good chance to get into the end zone on that drive, but their player just made a good play for the interception,” said Berry.
