The Blackville-Hilda High varsity girls made quick work of region rival Fox Creek High Feb. 5 in the Hawks Nest.

Fueled by the scoring of Shawanda Ferguson, the Lady Hawks built a double-digit lead early before soaring to a final 36-25 victory.

Ferguson garnered a double-double producing a game high in scoring and rebounding with 17 points and 14 boards.

Ferguson said it was a great team win with everyone contributing.

"It's always exciting when you win at home. I thought we played well on both ends of the court," Ferguson said. "I thought my teammates did a good job of feeding me the ball in the paint which allowed me to score some easy baskets."

The contest started with low scoring with the teams combining for only 12 first quarter points. However, early in the second quarter, the Lady Hawks took control with a 10-1 run for a 20-6 halftime lead.

In the last two wins, Blackville-Hilda has held its opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the field. Fox Creek High shot just 10-of-35 from the floor, including three-of-17 in the first half.

Blackville-Hilda coach William Hammond said he's not concerned with style points - just victories.

"This is the time of the season where a team takes a win any away they can get one," Hammonds said. "The game was a little slow as far as scoring, but we're still happy for the win. I thought we did a good job of controlling the tempo throughout. It was a game where we got an opportunity to play everyone."

Others providing offense for the Lady Hawks included Shamon Harley with six points and nine rebounds. Herquanda Williams had two points and seven rebounds while Danielle Brown added four points, six assists and five steals.

In other region action, the Lady Hawks picked up a big road win Feb. 2, snapped victory from the Lady Trojans of Ridge Spring-Monetta by a score of 40-38.

In the game, the Lady Hawks ran to a 30-22 third quarter lead before holding off a late fourth quarter surge by the Lady Trojans.

Topping the scoring for BHHS was Ferguson with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Brown had a good, all-around performance with eight points, seven steals and seven assists. Nickens produced eight points while Tyler and Williams each added four points.
