The D&D Sluggers of Barnwell found out the hard way what goes around, comes around in adult league softball.

Last season, the Sluggers got the best of the Varnville Mod Squad by sweeping them during a weekend series.

On Sunday in Blackville, The Mod Squad returned the favor from last year.

Highlighted by the hitting of Eric Moore of Hampton, The Mod Squad arrested the Sluggers by a score of 24-19.

The Mod Squad team led by as much as 12 runs before the Sluggers answered with a late rally to narrow the deficit.

At the plate, Moore put on a hitting exhibition, going three-for-three with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored.

With the win, The Mod Squad swept the weekend series after beating the Sluggers 23-13 on Saturday in Varnville.

Varnville coach Michael Givens said his team played like they practice all week.

"We had a solid week of practice and it showed in our performance today," Givens said. "I thought we did a good job of hitting the ball, especially when we had runners on base. We also ran the bases well and took advantage of errors."

The loss drops the Sluggers into a tie for first place in the division.

Sluggers coach Byron Barfield said the team struggled at the plate as well as defensively.

"It's hard to win games when you don't hit the ball," Barfield said. "We couldn't get the key hits when we had runners in scoring positions and defensively, we committed too many errors."

The hitting barrage started early for Varnville as the team plated six runs in its first at-bat.

For Varnville, B.J. Dunbar, Dennis White, Eric Moore, Sherod Moore, Ronnie Slater and Robert Doctor all scored in the inning.

In the second inning, The Mod Squad's lead ballooned to 10-0 on scores by Dunbar, White, Eric Moore and Sherod Moore.

On the verge of being trounced on their home field, the Sluggers got their bats going in the second inning. For D&D, Reggie Walker singled, then scored off a double by Myron Neal. Moments later, Neal scored off a hit by Dominic Creech to cut the lead to 10-2.

The uphill battled continued for the Sluggers in the fourth inning, trailing 16-3. Sparked by a two-run RBI double by William Hammond, the Sluggers scored five runs to cut the lead to 16-8. Others scoring in the inning included Myron Neal, Tommy Donaldson, Creech and Tim Daniels.

Ahead 20-11 going into the seventh inning, Mod Squad continued its hitting assault. Eric Moore provided the fireworks in the inning as he took 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for a two-run homer. The homer run gave The Mod Squad a 24-11 lead.

Trailing by 13 runs, the Sluggers tried to comeback in its last at-bat. Walker and Neal led with singles. One batter later, Donaldson lined a single to centerfield, scoring Walker.

The next batter, Damian Drummond belted a triple to centerfield, scoring Neal and Donaldson.

Behind by eight runs with one out, Marcus Robinson kept the rally alive with an RBI shot to left field. The hit scored Drummond.

After a hit by Daniels, Creech brough in Robinson with a sacrifice to deep center. Seconds later, Leroy Smalls brought the home crowd to their feet with a two-run homer to right field.

Trailing 24-19 with two outs and a runner on first base, the rally concluded for the Sluggers when the next batter popped out to centerfield to the end the game.

In other adult league action, the Kline Cypress Pros buried the Estill Undertakers by a score of 8-7.

In the contest, Kline jumped to a 6-1 lead behind the hitting of Freddie Hubert, then held off a late scoring surge by Estill.
Hubert was two-for-three with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Others shining at the plate for Kline included Terrance Harris, William Buckmon, Stacie Hartzog, Brunson Bell, Dorrell Ginn and Matthew Jenkins.

For the Kline Cypress Pros, Buckmon was the top pitcher.
