The Jefferson Davis Academy varsity football team has started the season with back-to-back wins. The Raiders’ latest victory came Friday night with a convincing 30-6 triumph over Clarendon Hall Academy in Summerton. The game was scoreless after the opening quarter. However, in the second and third quarter, the Raiders erupted for 21 unanswered points to take command. Senior Edward Givens turned in an good, all-around performance. On offense, Givens fueled the Raiders’ attack with 190 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Givens scored on runs of 59, 44 and 11 yards. He also ran in for two 2-point conversions. On defense, Givens led the unit with 13 tackles and two interceptions. Others producing for the Raiders included Nic Jamison, Matthew Webster and Alex Still. Jamison, who scored in the third quarter on a 60-yard run, finished with 145 yards. Webster had 45 yards on seven carries. Still played a solid game defensively registering 12 tackles, including three for losses. JDA coach Joey Lott said the team played well in spurts. “The game was a lot closer than the final score,” Lott said. “Offensively, we made some big gains. However, we also committed a lot of penalties and we turned over the ball a couple of times. We have to play more consistently. We can’t allow ourselves to be an up and down team.” Through the first two games, the Raiders have dominated their opponents with a 36-point average margin of victory. During the stretch, the Raiders’ offense has racked up more than 800 total yards while the defense has allowed only one touchdown. “Right now we’re playing okay, but there is still room for improvement,” Lott said. “We’ve been fortunate the first two weeks to get out to big leads, so we haven’t had to play catchup football yet. It’s good we’re winning, but this not the time to get too excited because the season has just started and there is a lot of football yet to be played.”
