The Jefferson Davis Academy Raiders football team put on a display of offensive  fireworks Friday night as they blasted Ridge Christian Academy 54-0 in the season opener.
The contest turned into a one-sided affair as JDA jetted to a 46-0 halftime lead and never looked back. For the game, the Raiders outgained Ridge Christian Academy in yardage by a margin of 434 to 31.
With the win, JDA improves to 1-0 in the season.
JDA coach Joey Lott said the team took care of business.
“Part of becoming a good football team is winning the games that yo are supposed to win. I thought we did good job of that tonight,” Lott said. “Offensively, we got some points on the scoreboard early and everything just kind of fell into place.”
Junior quarterback Matthew Webster led the way on offense. Webster averaged 26 yards every time he touched the ball, finishing with 107 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. Webster scored on runs of eight and 71 yards.
The Raiders cast of offensive contributers also included Edward Givens, Nic Morris, Chris McLean and Paul Thomas.
Givens, who ran for 98 yards, scored on runs of 55 and 42 yards. Morris looked sharp in his first varsity game. Morris hammered out 87 yards on eight attempts. He also scored on runs of one and 29 yards. McLean, who scored on a one-yard dive, rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown. Thomas rushed for 44 yards on seven carries.
Defensively, the Raiders took the air out of Ridge Christian Academy’s sails early in the contest. A defensive unit led by Alex Still and Matt Grubbs held Ridge Christian Academy to minus 13 yards of total offensive in the first half.  Alex Still led with eight tackles. Grubbs had six tackles and an assist. Morris had five tackles and a fumble recovery.
“This game gave us an opportunity to play a lot of our younger players. Overall, I was pleased with the effort from everyone,” said Lott.
