Lady Blue Devils snag regional basketball victory
The Williston-Elko High varsity girls basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to post a 45-32 victory over Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High Jan. 5 in the Devils Den.
Leading 28-24 after three quarters, the Lady Blue Devils pulled away down the stretch, outscoring the Lady Trojans by a count of 17-6 in the final quarter.
With the win, Williston-Elko High improves to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in region play.
Williston-Elko High coach Eva Strong said the team is gaining confidence.
"Early in the season, we made a lot of miscues because we were a little timid in our play," Strong said. "However, now the girls are coming along and beginning to put it together on both ends of the court."
For Williston-Elko High, four players scored in double figures, including junior guard Charnica Williams.
Williams posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four assists and five steals. Jalen Reed also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Others shining included Courtney Corley. Jaleen Reed and Tierra Richberg. Corley had 11 points, six steals and four assists while Richberg controlled the paint, finishing with 10 points, four blocked shots and nine rebounds.
On Friday night in the Devil Den, the Lady Blue Devils made quick work of Ridge Spring-Monetta High by a score 46-27.
It was all Ridge Spring-Monetta at the start of the game as the Lady Trojans ran to a 11-4 first quarter lead.
However, that would be it for the Lady Trojans highlights as for as scoring.
The Lady Trojans shooting went cold during the last three quarters with the team,connecting on only six field goals for 16 points.
Meanwhile for the Lady Blue Devils, Tierra Richberg had a break-out game with 18 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Richberg was at her best offensively in the second quarter, scoring 12 of the team's 18 points.
Others playing well included Charnica Williams with 14 points and six steals. Raven Young and Courtney Corley each had four points while Shakenya Corbett added two points.
"Offensively, we have cut down on turnovers and defensively, we're contesting shots and limiting teams to one-shot opportunities due to our solid rebounding," said Strong.
