Local team wins in church league play

In church league softball action Saturday, Greater Sweet Branch of Blackville knocked off Pleasant Hill Lodge of Ehrhardt by a score of 7-6.
In the contest, Greater Sweet Branch jumped to a 6-1 lead, then held off a late rally by Pleasant Hill Lodge.
The win was the first of the tournament for Greater Sweet Branch.
The team squandered a six-run lead in its opening round loss.
Greater Sweet Branch coach Percell Jeter said the team stumbled at times, but held on for victory.
“We made some mistakes, but we found a way to finish the deal,” Jeter said.
 “At the start of the game, we were in rhythm in all phases. However, in the middle innings, we lost focus and that’s when the errors started.”
“This was a huge win for us, especially after the breakdowns we had in our first round loss,” coach Tommy Toole said. “This win wasn’t pretty by no means, but it was a victory non-the-less.”
For Greater Sweet Branch, the scoring started in the first inning when Lukisha Gushron singled, then scored off an RBI by Lonna Joyner.
One inning later, GSB added to its advantage. For the team, five runs came across home plate as Latisha Joyner, Nicole Thomas, Mozel Chisolm, Felita Holman and Mecca Mayes all scored for a 6-1 lead. Courtney Kemp and Lisa Gleaton  had RBIs in the inning.
Down by five runs, Pleasant Hill Lodge came back to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning.
The tie score lasted only a short while. GSB answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs to complete the scoring.
For the team, Courtney Kemp and Whitney Kemp led with singles and scored off an RBI by Latisha Joyner.
