WEHS girls win in low-scoring basketball game
WEHS guard Courtney Corley, seen here in an earlier game, hit seven points in an otherwise low-scoring affair against C.A. Johnson High.
It would be an understatement to say Williston-Elko varsity girls basketball team's offense was running on empty during the final quarter of Friday night's region game against C.A. Johnson High School.
The Lady Blue Devils tapped the bottom of the fuel tank with only one field goal in the game's final eight minutes.
However, despite their shooting woes, the Lady Blue Devils hung on for a 26-25 win over the Lady Hornets.
Williston-Elko High had its worst offensive production of the season, going 10-of-39 from the field.
C.A. Johnson High mirrored Williston-Elko High's inability to find the basket, making just nine-of-36 shots from the floor.
In spite of poor shooting from both teams, the contest was competitive due the closeness of the score.
There were nine lead changes and five tied scores. Six lead changes coming in the first half.
With the win, Williston-Elko High improves to 9-7 in the season and 8-3 in region play.
"What can I say? We played good enough to win and that what counts," Williston-Elko High head coach Eva Strong said. "The bottom line is we had a very poor shooting night. Offensively, we had opportunities. We just couldn't get the ball to go in the basket."
Williston-Elko High grabbed its first advantage in the contest on the shooting of Jared Reed, who pumped in six first-quarter points for a 7-4 lead.
After several lead changes in second quarter, the Lady Blue Devils took a 17-12 halftime lead on baskets by Tierra Richberg, Courtney Corley and Charnica Williams.
In the second half, defense was the story of the game for the Lady Blue Devils. Led by Reed, Richberg and Corley, the team forced 12 turnovers, including three turnovers in the final minute of play to preserve the win.
For the game, Reed led the team with nine points. Richberg had eight points and 12 rebounds. Corley contributed seven points, six steals and five assists.
