Williston-Elko High honors athletes at banquet
Williston-Elko High School athletic department honored its student-athletes May 14 at its annual banquet.
Blue Devils sports continues to reach new heights its second year under athletic director Dwayne Garrick.
This season, Williston-Elko sports captured region championships in girls and boys tennis, baseball and golf. In varsity football, the Blue Devils were upper state champs. In boys varsity basketball, Williston-Elko advanced to the final rounds of Upper State.
Garrick said the program is coming along well.
"I was really pleased with our overall performance this school year. The goal is to be competitive in every sport. We had every team to make the playoffs this year. I think that's a good accomplishment," said Garrick.
The auditorium was almost filled to capacity as students gathered to accept awards and letters.
Award winners in varsity football included Jackson Cooper as Special Team Player of the Year; Josh Epps was named Offensive Back of the Year; Defensive Back of the Year went to Quantel Mack. Darryl Salley tabbed Offensive Lineman of the Year while Andrae Williams was named Defensive Lineman of the Year. The Impact Player of the Year was awarded to Dexter Staley.
In volleyball, Kyla Coleman was named Offensive Most Valuable Player. Raven Young was selected Defensive Most Valuable Player.
In girls varsity basketball, Offensive Most Valuable went to Courtney Corley. Kyla Coleman was named Defensive Most Valuable Player. For the junior varsity girls, Nashime Carter received the Sportsmanship Award.
For boys varsity basketball, Antonio "Busta" Walker was named Most Outstanding Player. The Coaches Award went to Quantel Mack.
In varsity baseball, Sam Scroggs was selected Most Valuable Player. Charles Melton and Brent Bodiford were named Co-Offensive Players of the Year. In junior varsity baseball, Jacob Nix was named Most Valuable Player. Caleb Everson named Mr. Hustle.
Soccer award recipients were Jeelani Robinson as Most Improved Player and James Elledge as Best All-Around. In golf, John Melton was selected Most Valuable Player and Ben Aldelman was named Most Improved.
In varsity softball, Kayla Nix was the recipient of the Coaches Award. The Most Valuable Player went to Jennifer Croft.
In junior varsity boys basketball, Kalin Strong was named Offensive Player of the Year. Defensive Player of the Year went to Demetrius Fascion.
In girls tennis, Shelly Kennerly was named Most Valuable Player while Allyson Jerkins tabbed the Rookie of the Year honor. In boys tennis, Josh Vargo was named Most Valuable Player. Zachary Pruitt was received Rookie of the Year.
In girls track and field, Andrianna Houston was named Top Field Performer while Jalen Reed was named Top Sprinter. For the boys, Marque Odom was named Top Field Performer. Rokeem Williams was selected Top Sprinter.
In boys middle school basketball, Alex Young was named Most Valuable Player. Antonio Coleman got the Hustle Award.
In middle school football, Most Valuable Player went to Shaquan Gaffney. John Melton got the Defensive Player of the Year.
For varsity cheering, Kristin Williams was named Most Valuable Player. Most Inspirational went to Karisma Young. For the junior varisty team, Ashley Nix was named Most Inspirational. Celie Garrick got Most Spirited. For middle school, Mattison Bolen received Most Spirited and Amiracle Simmons got the Leadership Award.
The three-sport letterman awards went to Jalen Reed, Tierra Richberg, Courtney Corley, Rokeem Williams, Quantel Mack, Kayla Coleman, Raven Young and Wilbur Green.
Golf coach Ronnie Neville received the Service Award. The Appreciation Award went to Robert Cooper.
