Andrew Rhesa “Andy” Thomas II

Posted

Andrew "Andy" Thomas II, beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on August 27th, 2026, at the age of 60 surrounded by family.

Anyone who knew Andy knew that he had a deep passion for history. He spent more than 20 years working in academics at the University of South Carolina, but when the opportunity in 2018 arose to become the Museum Curator at the Cayce Historical Museum, he knew he had finally found his true calling. Few people ever get the chance to make a living doing what they love, but Andy was one of the fortunate ones who did.

Andy especially loved studying history through the lens of food and cooking, and he eagerly shared that passion with others. Whether he was preparing a meal in a historic cabin or baking bread in a clay kiln, he embraced every opportunity to demonstrate colonial living history. He found great joy in bringing the past to life, helping others connect with history in a way that was both meaningful and memorable. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and love for storytelling made history more than just a subject—it became an experience for everyone around him.

Andy was passionate about many things, but at the very top of the list was Clemson. From the time he was a young boy, he lived and breathed all things Clemson, especially football. Through his lifelong love of the Tigers, he created countless cherished memories with family and friends, including many wonderful people we were blessed to meet along the way.

Traveling to away games together helped nurture another of Andy's great passions: exploring the world. He wanted to go everywhere, see everything, and experience all that life had to offer. He especially loved traveling out West and visiting our nation's beautiful parks, which inspired yet another passion, hiking. Andy was deeply moved by the beauty of God's creation, and hiking allowed him to experience nature in a peaceful, quiet way, far removed from the noise and distractions of everyday life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Karen Walsh Thomas; his parents, Rhesa and Patricia Thomas; brothers, Chris Thomas (Pam) and Jim Thomas (Yana); along with many nieces, nephews, great nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 30th at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Fairfax, Fairfax, S.C. Interment followed at Fairfax Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
