The identity of a bicyclist who was killed earlier this week has been released.
Luis Capen, 47, of Old Whiskey Road, Barnwell, died on Tuesday, September 22 after he was struck by a vehicle on Red Oak Road at Kimberwick Drive around 6:30 a.m.
“Capen was riding a bicycle through the woods. As he approached the roadway, he was hit by a vehicle and transported to Wellstar in Augusta where he passed away later in the morning,” said Barnwell County Coroner Denise Gibson on Thursday, September 24.
Release of his identity took a while as the coroner’s office worked to locate Capen’s next of kin.
Capen was struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling south on Red Oak Road. The wreck occurred after Capen left the shoulder of the road and entered the roadway, said Lance Corporal Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).
The sole occupant of the 2011 Silverado was not injured, according to Glover.
The fatal collision remains under investigation by the SCHP. No other information is being released by the SCHP at this time.
