Daniel Percy McCants will be sadly missed by his family and friends. “Danny,” “Dan,” “PopPop,” and “Uncle Danny” passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024 with End Stage COPD. He was born on October 17, 1948 in Port Arthur, Texas to the late Percy Cleopus and Adma Thomas McCants.
Danny moved to Barnwell, South Carolina with his parents and sister, Dianne McCants Brown. He graduated from Barnwell High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Danny worked as a page in the South Carolina Senate and was a devoted member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.
The friendships Danny forged in high school and college lasted a lifetime. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, quick wit, and huge, generous heart. A tremendous sports fanatic, Danny was an excellent Legion baseball player. He became an avid tennis player in his mid-twenties, and played at Quail Valley Racquet Club and won many tournaments with his tennis buddies! Danny also enjoyed and supported the USC football team by attending games and contributing to the athletics program.
Danny’s Roman Catholic faith was of utmost importance and a top priority throughout his life. He made certain that his children received their religious training. Danny loved his three daughters and was a fabulous girl dad! He and his former wife, Mary McCants Turner, remained friends for many decades.
Those left to mourn his loss include his daughters: Meredith M. Dieppe (Bubba) and Lindsay M. Smith (Matt); sister: Dianne M. Brown (Steve) and their four children; and his nine grandchildren: Griffin Ellis, Joseph Dieppe, Peter Dieppe, Earli Dieppe, Mary B. Smith, Adma Smith, Banks Wiggins, Keller Wiggins, and Wells Gibson. 
Danny is predeceased by his daughter, Mallory McCants Gibson. 
The family would like to thank the Amdeisys Hospice nurses and the McLeod caregivers for all of the love and support during Danny’s final weeks of life. 
Danny donated his body to science at Georgia Health Services, University Anatomical Donations, Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy. He also contributed to and supported a variety of charities. In memory of Danny, a donation to one of the charities listed below would be greatly appreciated by his family. Charities include: St. Jude Children’s Research HospitalOur Lady of the Hills Catholic ChurchCarolina Wildlife Center, and Pawmetto Lifeline.
A Memorial Mass for Danny will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, 120 Marydale Lane, Columbia, South Carolina, 29210. Fr. Santiago Guzman will be officiating. The family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall after services.
