Former S.C. Governor Nikki Haley, who grew up in Bamberg County, kicked off her 2024 presidential bid Feb. 15 during a rally in Charleston.
“DC is broken. It’s been broken for a long time. We have to have the courage to walk away from the status quo, walk away from all the past problems and say, we are not going to leave this country to our children. We’re going to make sure that we leave our country better for our children because they deserve it,” she said.
Haley was South Carolina's first female and first minority governor. She served from 2011 to 2017 before becoming U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (Jan. 2017 to Dec. 2018).
Haley joins former President Donald Trump as the second GOP contender for the Republican nomination.
