STUART, FL - On Sunday, August 11, 2024, our beloved Luther, or “BJ,” as he was affectionately known, was called to his eternal home after a valiant fight, passing away surrounded by family at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart. He left behind loved ones, friends, and neighbors, who will miss him dearly.
Luther Jones was born on February 23, 1948, in Blackville, South Carolina, to the late John Henry Jones and Margie Jones. After graduating from Macedonia High School in 1969, Luther was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on September 6, 1969, at the tender age of 20. He proudly served two years for his country as a rifleman trained in Land Mine Warfare, rising to Corporal. After being wounded in the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged. During his tour, he earned numerous decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Due to his injury during the war, Luther was presented with the Purple Heart Medal, which distinguished his incredible personal sacrifice while in the line of duty.
After recuperating, he moved to Florida and joined his brothers, working in the construction industry as a carpenter. He later met and married his beautiful wife, Ida Mae Jones, on December 18, 1976. They were united in Holy Matrimony for 48 years. Known for his genuine love for his family, Luther was a cherished brother, uncle, cousin, and friend always remembered as the BEST, not perfect, but real. His love and presence blessed many lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Johnnie Jones Jr., Joseph Jones, Bobby Jones, Nathaniel Jones, Lesley Clarke, and Estelle Jones.
