Dear Editor,
I was greatly saddened to learn of Judge Rodney Peeples's death.
I first met him on a high school class trip to witness a trial. I got to know him better during my years of research at the courthouse. He had a pleasing personality with a colorful and charming flair. I remember his bringing the ladies of the courthouse beautiful and fragrant gardenias from his yard.
When I saw him at Hitchcock Physical Therapy, he warmly greeted me and added to my list of memorable quotes - "It's better to be pissed off than to be pissed on." I imagine he had a plethora of such clever expressions. I told him I would put that on a T-shirt and attribute it to him. He just laughed, but I really did it when his portrait was painted.
I always said that he, Edith Mixson, and Mary Griner were Hampton County's greatest gifts to Barnwell. I am sure they will all be greatly missed.
Jennings Rountree,
Barnwell
