Barnwell cross country team competes at Pelion

The Barnwell cross country team traveled to Pelion for a multi-team meet last Wednesday, September 25. There were teams from Barnwell, Gilbert, Aiken, North Augusta, Horse Creek Academy, Brookland-Cayce, Newberry Academy, Swansea, White Knoll, Bamberg-Ehrhardt, and Pelion at the event.

Barnwell veteran head coach Luke Catoe was asked about the meet and his team. He said, “Our first meet was not held until September 25 at Pelion, due to weather issues. Even though it was just our first time out this year, I thought we had a very successful meet. I was pleased with our runners’ times and efforts. Our next meet will be at Hampton County this Wednesday, October 2. As we have more meets and we get more experience, I feel our team will only get better.”

Barnwell’s top finisher was Jerry Smith III. Peyton Wood was Barnwell’s second fastest finisher and Jamarcus Coleman was third for the Horses. Callie Bozard was the top finisher for Barnwell’s girls team.

When asked about why it is so late in the season to be having a first meet, Coach Catoe replied, “Weather has had a big effect on us this season, more so than any other season. Practices have had to be shortened, and meets have been canceled. We have had to adjust and kind of roll with it!”

Catoe went on to talk about some of his runners, saying, “Peyton Wood has been running since 7th grade, for a total of six years. Tristan Harter has been competing for four years. Callie Bozard has been running for three years. We also have a few younger runners to keep your eyes on. As far as leaders and top performers, Jamarcus Coleman, Jerry Smith III and Peyton Wood standout for the boys and Callie Bozard does a great job competing for the girls. They've all been very dedicated and have continued to become better runners.”

If you are unfamiliar with cross country, it is different than regular track meets. There is just a single distance race that travels approximately 3.1 miles or 5 kilometers over various terrain. There may be long flat distances, or there might be a few hills included in the course, but it is not simply running around a track, but often teams finish or start at a traditional track. Spectators are welcome to come and cheer on their favorite teams or individuals.

Good luck to Coach Catoe and the Barnwell Warhorses as they travel to Hampton County Wednesday, October 2 for their next meet. Go Horses!
