BAMBERG - Caleb Elias Hartzog Sr., 85, of Bamberg, S.C. passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Born in Bamberg County, S.C., he was a son of the late Duward Belmont Hartzog and Mildred Jeanette Bushardt Hartzog. He served in the South Carolina National Guard and was a faithful member of Ghents Branch Baptist Church where he loved his church family. Mr. Hartzog was the groundskeeper and was the greeter for many years. He had a wonderful work ethic and always gave his best in any job. He worked as a DHI Technician for Clemson Extension where he tested milk at dairies, then later worked as a Fire Warden for the SC Forestry Commission until his retirement. He also worked for Bamberg County in the Maintenance Department. Mr. Hartzog was a 4-H leader for the Horse Club in Bamberg for many years, he loved his horses and other animals. He was a big supporter of the Relay for Life. His famous chicken perlo was always the best. He was a charter member of “Matheny’s Station Social Club” where he enjoyed talking to everyone and was always there to tease and bring laughter to others and his family that he dearly loved.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Jimmie Lee Way Hartzog; his sons, Cal (Stephanie) Hartzog, James (Glenda) Hartzog, Jerry (Doretta) Hartzog, Gregg (Dena) Hartzog and Freddie (Lisa) Hartzog; his grandchildren, Christopher Hartzog, James Hartzog, Lacey (TJ) Brown, Megan (Michael) Salvo, Brittany (Marty) Stroman, Ricky (Lauren) Hartzog, Calee Hartzog, Brandon Martin, Brittany Martin, Jessica (Benton) Wise, Will (Kayla Jo) Medlin, Chad (Sandy) Elliott and Summer (Bill) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Emalyn Salvo, Kaiden Salvo, Carter Brown, Mason Hartzog, Caleb Brown, Silas Martin, Harrison Wise, Wilkes Medlin, Drew Wise, Liam Hartzog, Landen Johnson, Brookie Oneal, and Isabella Johnson; a sister-in-law, Annette Delk; a brother-in-law, J.P. Robinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jo Hartzog Scott; and a brother, D. B. Hartzog Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at the Family Life Center of Ghents Branch Baptist Church, 1974 Ghents Branch Rd., Denmark, S.C. 29042. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at Ghents Branch Baptist Church with the Reverend Dale Hutto and Pastor Robert Templeton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
