On April 27 and 28, the 6th and 9th grade girls basketball teams for the Carolina Shockers traveled to Gilbert High School to play in the 2024 “S.E.S. Battle of the Best” basketball tournament.
After the 9th grade girls went on to win the first two games on Saturday night with one in overtime, they advanced to the finals. The 6th grade girls went one and one and also advanced as well. The championship games were played at River Bluff High School and Columbia High School.
“Although both teams lost in the championship, it was a battle to the finish. The 9th grade girls won the runner-up trophy which was a great honor. Also, one of the girls ended up being the player of the week. The 6th grade girls placed as well,” said Coach John Johnson.
The Carolina Shockers includes girls from Blackville-Hilda High, Barnwell High, Andrew Jackson Academy, Aiken, and Allendale-Fairfax High. There are also boys teams.
The Carolina Shockers organization is more than just a basketball team. “We strive to make a difference in our communities through basketball, financial literacy, and life skills training. The team is encouraged to maintain good grades, participate in community service, and to be a positive role model in their community,” said Johnson.
