Everyone knows the story of old Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol”, but I bet you never heard what happened a year later when Ebenezer Scrooge sues the ghosts that brought about such great changes in Ebenezer.
The Barnwell Circle Theatre presents: “The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge," a comedy by Mark Brown.
One year later, we find old Ebenezer Scrooge suing the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future for kidnapping, endangerment, trespassing, and several more charges.
What has changed over the last year? Will Scrooge get away with this? What can they do to ghosts, if convicted? You will have to come see The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge at the Circle Theatre to answer these questions.
This play is directed by veteran Circle Theatre director, producer, and board member, Beth Miller. Beth has served as a producer or director in more than 15 Circle Theatre productions.
She is joined by her husband, Jeff Miller, who is serving as assistant director and producer for this show. Caroline Randall is the prop mistress and is playing several roles in the show.
“This cast is made up of seasoned performers and a few newbies. All are doing a wonderful job with their character(s) and we've seen wonderful character development from these talented folks. Your sides will be hurting after all the laughter by the end of the show,” said Beth. “Thankfully, during the uncertain fall weather and return to school sicknesses that can wreak havoc on casts, we've been largely spared. Luckily, I was the one to get sick and missed rehearsals. Thank you, Assistant Director, Jeff Miller!”
Beth went on to give a little insight into “The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge”, saying, “Nearly all are familiar with “A Christmas Carol” where we were introduced to the curmudgeon, Ebenezer Scrooge, and his miraculous character transformation.
“The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge” sees the return of the Ebenezer of old! This is a hilarious play about Scrooge's new shenanigans and the audacity of him to actually sue, in court, the four spirits that haunted him and made him a better man. Can you imagine?
This show is definitely a must-see as the ghosts and Scrooge are up to their old tricks. You'll never see another courtroom comedy like this one and will laugh throughout the trial and will want to come to court again!”
The cast includes lots of Circle Theatre regulars like Renée Owens, Dan Anderson, Marion Young, Caroline Randall, Donna Creech, Brenda Chorn, Jacob Sanders, Kell Anderson, and for a special one weekend only engagement, we have brought back the legendary Dennis Knapp for the opening weekend.
In addition to the regulars, the “newbies” that Beth mentioned include Chuck Randall, Hannah Branch, JeNé New, and another special guest, for a limited one weekend engagement, Frank Young.
Frank is no stranger to the stage, having performed in Hampton, but will be making his Barnwell debut the second weekend.
You might need to come both weekends to see which Judge Stanchfield Pearson is your favorite. If you can’t make it both times, you are fine.
Both are doing a great job as an old, curmudgeonly, judge. Some might say Dennis and Frank were typecast, but that is up for debate.
“The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge” opens this weekend. Show times will be Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 at 7 p.m. and then there will be a Sunday, December 8 matinee show at 3 p.m. The following weekend, showtimes will be Friday, December 13 and Saturday, December 14 at 7 p.m. and a Sunday, December 15 matinee show at 3 p.m.
