BLACKVILLE - Gene Simms Owens Sr., 87, passed away at his home surrounded by family on January 10, 2025. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 13, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Dyches Funeral Home Chapel (11372 Ellenton Street, Barnwell, S.C.) with Rev. Jay Fanning officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Barnwell County Memorial Gardens, Barnwell, S.C. Pallbearers will be Bruce Mead, Christopher Williams, Cameron Owens, Mason Owens, Nathan Owens and Joshua Hair.
Gene was born on August 5, 1937, in Meyers Mill, S.C., Barnwell County to the late Gilmore S. Owens Sr. and Dora Mae Wilson Owens. He was a member of Springfield Methodist Church. He retired after 35 years of service with TDS Telecom. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty L. Owens; four children, Robin O. (Jim) Noel of Williston, Gene (Frances) Owens Jr. of Aiken, Kathryn O. (Lonnie) Dyches of Williston and Bradley W. Owens of Blackville; grandchildren, Christopher (Devan) Williams, Ashleigh (Joshua) Hair, Malerie (Kevin) Wall, Bruce (Tiffani) Mead, Summer (Ronnie) Palmer, Cameron Owens, Mason Owens, Nathan Owens; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Agape Hospice for their caring support.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Oscar Owens, Franklin Owens, Bobby Owens, Joe Owens, Gilmore Owens Jr.; and one sister, Ernestine (Sis) Owens Harriett.
The family has entrusted Dyches Funeral Home and Crematory with the arrangements.
