A native of Barnwell and alumnus of Barnwell High, Jonathan returned to his hometown in 2010 after earning his mass media degree from Anderson University.
He started as a staff writer for the newspaper before being promoted to managing editor in 2014. In July 2021, he purchased the newspaper from Gannett Media, bringing the paper back to local ownership for the first time in over 30 years.
“I love this community and I love this newspaper! I feel blessed each day to work with my amazing team of dedicated professionals to publish a quality newspaper of factual, unbiased reporting to keep our community informed. It’s amazing to see how much we’ve grown since returning to local ownership,” said Jonathan.
Being a journalist allows him to meet new people and learn new things about his community while covering stories – good and bad – that truly matter.
“I love sharing stories that matter so community members can stay informed about what’s happening. I also love holding public officials accountable. I especially enjoy reporting on fun and positive stories that highlight the good in our community,” he said.
Some people focus on what small towns like Barnwell and Allendale don’t have. However, Jonathan knows his community is charming and filled with so much history and natural beauty.
“I love how tight knit we are and especially how people come together to help in times of need,” he said.
