ALLENDALE - Mary Allen Watkins Chappell passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024, at her residence at the age of 89. Mary was born on April 11, 1935, in Albermarle, North Carolina, to William Eugene Watkins II and Callie Hurley Allen. She graduated from King’s Business College in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mary worked many years with her husband, Burney, in their peach business, Dixie View Orchards, and running Mary’s U-Pick peach orchard in front of her family home in Allendale, South Carolina, until her retirement. Mary enjoyed reading, traveling, growing many plants and flowers, watching sports and Nascar races. Mary was an avid Carolina Gamecock and Atlanta Braves fan.
She is survived by her daughters, Tina (David) Snipes, Jill (Raymond) Fail, Jan (William) Brant and Jeanie (David) Gour; her grandchildren, Ronnie (Megan) Davis, Callie (Kevin) Faile, Taylor Jarvis, Jordan Gour, Linsday Gour and Phillip Fail; four great-granddaughters, Hailey Davis, Emory Davis, Leslie Faile, and Sadie Scalzott; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Edgar Burney Chappell Jr.; her parents; brother, Eugene Watkins III; sisters, Ruth Watkins Harmon, and Francis Watkins McCall; and grandson, Robert Tyler Davis.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Keith Smith Funeral Home, 128 Water Street, Allendale, South Carolina.
