A new reporter has joined the team at The People-Sentinel.

Stephanie Shaver started work this week as a general assignment reporter where she will cover a variety of local news topics for the locally-owned newspaper.

She recently moved to Barnwell County from her home state of Minnesota.

“My boyfriend and I packed up our lives, along with our dog, Buckley, and made the 1,300-mile move. My experience so far in Barnwell County has been nothing short of wholesome. I have been shown the true meaning of "Southern hospitality" and look forward to becoming a staple in such a close-knit community,” said Shaver.

Born and raised in small-town Minnesota, she attended Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN where she earned a BA in media studies and digital communications.

“My passion for journalism grew in 2019-20, as the political climate created uncertainty and division in society. I wanted to become a reporter to help make the change I want to see in the world. My main goal as a reporter is to one day write an investigative piece with a significant impact that induces societal change,” said Shaver.

After college, she decided to expand her job search outside of Minnesota.

“I came across an ad for a position at a locally-owned newspaper in South Carolina and applied, never expecting to hear back. Little did I know, the job I applied for on a whim was about to become the blessing I was waiting for,” said Shaver.

In December 2024, she accepted an offer for her “dream job” at The People-Sentinel.

“I’m excited to have Stephanie join our team at The People-Sentinel. Her personality and desire to make a difference through journalism stuck out to me during the interview process. I look forward to seeing the impact Stephanie will make in our community,” said Jonathan Vickery, publisher/ owner of The People-Sentinel.

Though she is a long way from her hometown, Shaver looks forward to getting to know her new home in South Carolina and building relationships with the people who call it home. She is also excited to tell the stories of the community.

“At The People-Sentinel, we remain committed to local journalism. We believe in publishing stories that are factual, fair and unbiased. Our job is to inform and educate the community plus hold public officials accountable,” said Vickery.
