BRUNSON - Sonya Padgett-Collins, a beloved mother, wife, sister, and friend, was born on June 5, 1965, in Hampton, South Carolina. She left this world to be with our Heavenly Father on March 4, 2025, at the Hampton Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was 59 years old.
Sonya was the cherished daughter of the late George Dewitt Sr., the late Pasty Sanders, and bonus mother Janelle Barker (Mama Nelle). Throughout her life, she embodied the spirit of kindness and warmth, lighting up every room she entered with her bright smile and vibrant personality. Described as a "spitfire," Sonya had a unique ability to speak her mind, whether offering words of encouragement or sharing her candid thoughts. Her unwavering love and support for her family and friends were evident in everything she did. Sonya was the type of person who would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need, always putting others before herself.
Left to honor her memory are her loving and devoted husband, John Collins; her sons, Brent Padgett (Caroline) and Hayden Collins; her daughters, Megan Collins and Hallie Collins; and her bonus children, Aj Mew, and Devon Johnson. Sonya took immense pride in being a grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren: Cherish Padgett, Callie Padgett, BayLee Padgett, Ava Padgett, Mason Collins, and Kyler Ferguson. Each of them held a special place in her heart. In addition to her immediate family, Sonya is survived by her siblings: Sherry Bolling, Jennifer Sumler (Jeff), George “Bubba” DeWitt Jr., sister-in-law Robin (James) Taylor, and bonus sister Mary Johnson; along with a host of nieces and nephews, including her special great-great-nephew, Se’Brynn Drain, who brought her much joy.
Sonya was predeceased by her beloved parents, Pasty Sanders and George Dewitt Sr., whose legacy of love she carried with her throughout her life.
The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Sonya's vibrant life on March 8, 2025, at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church. A time of visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the funeral service at 11 a.m. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support shown during this difficult time. Sonya will be greatly missed!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sonya's memory to the Hickory Grove Baptist Church cemetery fund.
