Charlie Irwin joined The People-Sentinel as a reporter in August 2026. A native of Dubuque, Iowa, he brings three years of newspaper experience to Barnwell County.
Irwin graduated from Loras College with a degree in creative writing, focusing on journalism, and a minor in rhetoric and public writing. Before moving to South Carolina, he worked in the sports department at the Telegraph Herald in Dubuque, covering high school and college athletics as well as dirt track auto racing.
Irwin is passionate about local journalism and believes community newspapers play an important role in telling the stories that larger news outlets often overlook. At The People-Sentinel, he looks forward to getting to know the people and history of the area while producing meaningful stories for readers.
Outside of work, Irwin enjoys golf, auto racing, dining out, attending sporting events, playing sports video games and watching movies. A former collegiate track athlete, he competed at the Drake Relays three times.
