Preparing for a Strong Start to the 2025–2026 School Year

Barnwell County School District hopes you and your family are enjoying a safe and relaxing summer break. It’s hard to believe we are already entering the final weeks before we begin the 2025–2026 school year. This is always such an exciting time as we look forward to welcoming our students back to the classroom, reconnecting with families, and continuing to work together.

We know the start of a new school year brings a mixture of anticipation, optimism, and sometimes a few nerves–for students and parents alike. As part of our motto, “Every Student Matters. Every Moment Counts,” we are committed to making every child feel supported, welcomed, and ready to learn and grow. As you begin to think about transitioning from summer back to school routines, there are a few ways you can help your child get ready for a smooth and successful start.

  1. Ease Back Into a Routine

Summer often means later bedtimes, different meal schedules, and more unstructured time. While this break is well deserved, gradually reintroducing school-year routines can help children adjust more easily. Over the next few weeks, consider establishing how you will transition back into bedtime and wake-up times to help reset your child’s internal clock. A predictable routine helps children feel more rested and ready to learn on that first day back.

  1. Make Time for Reading and Learning Activities

Keeping young minds active over the summer months makes the return to academic expectations much smoother. Even small, informal learning opportunities can have a big impact. Encourage your child to read a book of their choice every day or explore educational games, puzzles, or projects that align with their interests. For older students, this could include practicing math skills or researching topics that inspire them. For younger children, visiting the library, counting objects around the house, or writing postcards to family members can keep their skills sharp. These efforts not only prepare students academically but also show them that learning is part of everyday life.

  1. Talk About the Year Ahead

Whether your child is feeling excited, uncertain, or somewhere in between, talking openly about the start of school can ease worries and build confidence. Take time to ask them what they’re looking forward to and what they may be concerned about. For children entering a new school or grade level, walking through what to expect–new teachers, different classrooms, and fresh opportunities–can help them feel more comfortable. Remind your child that it’s normal to have mixed emotions about change and that there will be many people ready to help them adjust and feel at home.

  1. Meet Your School Community

One of the most valuable ways to prepare for the year ahead is to connect with your child’s school and teachers before the first day. We warmly invite you to join us at our Meet and Greet events across Barnwell County, which are scheduled at each of our schools in the coming weeks. During these times, you and your child can tour classrooms, ask questions, and build relationships that set a positive tone for the year. Meeting teachers face-to-face and becoming familiar with the school environment can greatly reduce first-day jitters and foster a sense of belonging.

Please see below for the dates and times for each school’s Meet and Greet:

  1. Stay Connected

Strong communication between home and school plays a vital role in supporting student success. We encourage all families to follow their child’s school on social media and to regularly check our websites for important updates and announcements as the first day approaches. Parent Square is our primary communication platform and allows schools to reach you quickly via text, email, and app notifications. Make sure your contact information is up to date so you don’t miss reminders.

If you ever have questions or need support, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school office. We are here to help.

On behalf of our entire Barnwell County School District team, I want to thank you for your continued partnership and support. It is truly a privilege to serve our students, families, and community. Together, we can ensure that every student feels valued and prepared to succeed every day.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. We look forward to seeing you very soon and making the 2025–2026 school year our best one yet.
