Barnwell County School District schools will join communities across South Carolina and the nation on Friday, September 11, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
At 8:46 a.m.—the time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center—students and employees will be invited to observe a moment of silence. The district will pause to remember the innocent lives lost, honor the heroes who responded and reflect on the courage, sacrifice and unity demonstrated by Americans in the face of tragedy.
“For today’s students, September 11 is history rather than a personal memory,” said BCSD Superintendent Dr. Crissie Stapleton. “It is important that we help them understand not only what happened that day, but also the extraordinary examples of courage, citizenship, service and love of country that followed. This moment of remembrance allows us to honor those who were lost while helping a new generation appreciate the strength and unity shown by our nation.”
Schools may also incorporate age-appropriate lessons and discussions to help students learn about the events of September 11 and the people whose bravery and selflessness became enduring examples of service to others.
Through this observance, Barnwell County School District seeks to provide students with a meaningful opportunity to better understand the history, principles and people that have shaped the nation they inherit.
