Letter to the Editor: Miss Jane: a priceless piece of Barnwell

Posted

Dear Editor,

I was greatly saddened to learn from a friend of the passing of Jane Owens Bradley. I remember for years her working at the courthouse - always a joyous and vivacious character. She had a constant cheerfulness - often with an underlying subtle sarcasm.

I remember her once telling me when she was a little girl, how (the drunken?) probate judge John K. Snelling ran over her bicycle and then replaced it and many other such tales. Once, when Bill Gripp was County Administrator, Miss Jane told him, "Mr. Gripp, Jennings Rountree said ..." Somehow, I think he was rather annoyed, and Miss Jane was her usual cheerful self-enjoying his annoyance. When she told me, I had to laugh, and it brought a smile to my face. I think there were not too many days that dear Miss Jane did not bring a smile to many people's faces.

Miss Jane was a priceless piece of Barnwell and will be missed by all who knew her. She was a true ray of sunshine in our lives.
