Students learn safe driving techniques through virtual simulator

Posted

Barnwell County students dodged virtual trees and aimed to stay on the road while behind the wheel of a vehicle simulator to see the dangers of impaired or distracted driving.

The International Save A Life Tour was brought to Williston-Elko High School, Blackville-Hilda High School, Jefferson Davis Academy, and Barnwell High School during the week of April 15 through a sponsorship by the Axis I Center of Barnwell.

The Save a Life Tour has come to Barnwell County in previous years to teach students the impact and potentially deadly consequences of dangerous driving through videos, discussion, and the vehicle simulators.

Students used a virtual reality headset mimicking alcoholic impaired reaction times to navigate roadways; some virtually crashing into other cars and some into trees or houses.

The safe driving program is operated by Matrix Entertainment, a company providing immersive educational programs across the country.
